Laparoscopic Gastric Band Surgery
Dr. Goldstein
is proud to offer the LAP-BAND System
for weight loss - an innovative, safe, and effective surgical intervention
for obese adult patients who have repeatedly failed more conservative
weight reduction alternatives such as supervised diet, drugs, exercise,
and behavior-modification programs. The LAP-BAND System creates an earlier
feeling of fullness and limits food consumption, resulting in nutritionally
sound and lasting weight loss. The LAP-BAND System is an adjustable band
that is placed around the upper portion of the stomach to restrict the
amount of food that can be consumed and to create a longer feeling of
satiety.

The LAP-BAND is placed laparoscopically without cutting or stapling
of the stomach or gastrointestinal re-routing to bypass normal digestion.
The procedure is safer and less invasive than other obesity surgeries
and can afford the same degree of weight loss. It is also the only adjustable
and reversible option for patients. To date over 300,000 patients worldwide
have undergone the LAP-BAND System procedure. Dr. Goldstein has personally
performed over 400 Lap-Band operations to date and is the most experienced
LAP-BAND surgeon in both Camden and Burlington counties of New Jersey.
The procedure is being offered as part of a multi-disciplinary approach
to the evaluation and management of bariatric patients, in cooperation
with several different experienced bariatric professionals. The comprehensive
program includes medical, psychological, nutritional, physiological,
and emotional support for patients that have undergone the LAP-BAND operation.
Dr. Goldstein is proud to be able to offer his patients several different options for pre-operative
and post-operative care, ranging in cost. His patients are required to enroll in a bariatric support
program, as Dr. Goldstein knows patients do best when enrolled in such a program, but the choice of
which program they enroll in, and which hospital they choose to have their surgery at, is up to the patient.
Most bariatric surgeons are not able to offer this choice.
Dr. Goldstein can perform Lap-Band surgery at either the Virtua Marlton Hospital or Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center.
If you are concerned about the cost of weight
loss surgery, be sure to attend one of Dr. Goldstein's private, free, no obligation, informational lectures, and he will explain
the different options available to you.
Please note, if you attend one of the Virtua sponsored lectures,
rather than his private lectures, he will only be able to discuss the Virtua New Beginnings option at that time, but
feel free to ask him about other options during your office visit.
Free informational lectures are offered several times each month for patients interested in learning more about the procedure.
Dr. Goldstein's office
accepts most forms of insurance for the LAP-BAND System procedure.
If your insurance company does not provide coverage for weight loss surgery,
the office can make payment options available for you.
Please print and fill out the Lap Band Appointment Form if you are scheduled to see Dr. Goldstein in the office about Lap-Band surgery, and bring it with you to
your appointment.
What
makes Dr. Goldstein different from the other bariatric surgeons you may
have researched?
Dr. Goldstein is fellowship trained in bariatric surgery. This
means he spent a year of his surgical training specifically treating patients
suffering from obesity. He has been trained by surgeons who initially
trialed the Lap-Band system in the United States, and therefore has the
knowledge and experience to identify and avoid problems that other less
experienced surgeons can miss.
Dr. Goldstein is experienced at performing both laparoscopic gastric
bypass surgery and Lap-Band surgery and understands the differences
not only between the operations, but also between the challenges and lifestyle
changes the different patients face. He is an expert at helping those
patients who choose to undergo Lap-Band surgery achieve their goals without
confusing them with information meant for gastric bypass patients.
Dr. Goldstein performs all of the operations himself. There are
no surgery fellows, residents, or students performing the operations under
his guidance or assisting him in the operating room. Dr. Goldstein only
uses a second attending surgeon or certified professional surgical assistant
to assist him with the surgery. This is in stark contrast to many of the
training institutions around the nation, where junior surgeons learning
to do the procedure are performing the operations.
Dr. Goldstein performs all types of advanced laparoscopic surgery and
is prepared to handle any situation that may arise in the operating room.
Many bariatric surgeons have limited their practice only to weight loss
surgery, and thus have not performed other abdominal operations for quite
some time. You can rest assured that Dr. Goldstein still maintains all
of his surgical skills and credentials, and can offer his patients proper
and experienced treatment for a wide array of abdominal problems.
Dr. Goldstein lives in Voorhees, New Jersey with his wife and three
children and has established himself in the area. Many bariatric surgeons
leave patients wondering if they will be around a few years down the road.
What if my surgeon leaves the area? Whom will I turn to for follow-up
care and subsequent Lap-Band adjustments? Dr. Goldstein has no
intention of changing his practice location for the duration of his surgical
career.
Dr. Goldstein performs all of his Lap-Band adjustment procedures under
fluoroscopy or live x-ray. This means he is able to offer his
patients the following three specific advantages over most other weight
loss surgeons:
1.
He is able to access the Lap-Band port under direct vision without
the risk of blindly puncturing the Lap-Band tubing and causing a leak.
A leak in the Lap-Band system requires further surgery to correct.
2.
He is able to assure the patient that the Lap-Band is still in the
proper position, just as he inserted it at the time of the initial
operation, and that there is no sign of early Lap-Band slippage or dilation
of the pouch of stomach above the Lap-Band. This helps the patient modify
any potentially bad behavior before it leads to problems only corrected
by undergoing additional surgery.
3.
He is able to adjust the band to the exact degree of tightness around
the stomach in order to afford the patient the optimal degree of restriction
from the Lap-Band. This means the patient will actually see on the fluoroscopy
screen precisely how tight their band is at the time of the adjustment.
There is no question as to whether the amount of fluid instilled into
the Lap-Band is enough, or too much. This is something that physicians
who perform adjustments in their office cannot achieve.
The images shown below are exactly like those each and every patient,
who chose Dr. Goldstein to be their surgeon, sees each time they undergo
a Lap-Band adjustment. The fluoroscopy equipment allows the patient to
see both the Lap-Band and the port inside their body.

The
upper image shows the barium that the patient drinks passing through
the banded upper stomach. It is with this view that Dr. Goldstein tightens
the band to the precise degree necessary to make optimal use of the band.
The
lower image shows the port. It is with this view that Dr. Goldstein
accesses the port and avoids hitting the tubing with the needle.
The
bottom line is that Dr. Goldstein is an expert in his field. He performs
the surgery and follow-up with the dedication patients not only desire,
but require, in order to succeed at achieving lasting weight loss.
